The image of the Taj Mahal is one recognized around the world.  It was built for the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan upon her death in 1631.  The mausoleum took 22 years to complete and 20,000 men.  Constructed mostly from marble, the dome is adorned with precious and semi-precious stones.  The Taj Mahal is listed as a World Heritage Site. A mausoleum is a place of religious sanctity and reflections.  Visitors are asked to silence cell phones, not to touch anything, and stay quiet during their visit.  Motor vehicles are not allowed within 500 meters of the Taj Mahal.  The India bureau of tourism offers and recommends night viewing of the Taj Majal. They offer special night viewing tours to foreigners and tickets are only 750 rupee (less than $11 USD).  Citizens of India pay a little less.
